Ergonomics of monitors

Choosing the right screen is of great importance, for good legibility of the information on the screen, but also for comfort and to avoid tax of the eyes. In recent years, you see two opposing trends, on the one hand the monitors getting bigger, a 17 "flat screen is already not even discontinued, and 22" to 24 "displays are no exception. But on the other hand, they are smaller, because more and more people email and other applications on a 12 '' or 13 '' laptop, read their phone, Blackberry or I-phone. The small screens are of course ideal for mobile use, but for long term and intensive display use they are too small. Another trend is the use of dual displays, or widescreen displays that the screen can be split in two.

Image quality the specifications of display screens are greatly improved over the past few years, making the differences in this respect have become small. In other words, the image quality is on most screens. The distinguishing features:

  • Contrast value (for normal use is a standard contrast 450:1 (number of shades of gray) enough, for sharp display of colors is a higher value recommended)
  • resolution (density the number of image points, at higher resolutions can more information be displayed)
  • brightness (250 cd/m2 under normal lighting conditions is enough, when additional clarity is needed, for example when working outside or in environments with a lot of light is 350 cd/m2 or more recommended)
  • power consumption (20-35 W is a relatively low power consumption, also watch energy star label) Screens with a glossy surface, especially with laptops, increasingly being used. The advantage of such screens is that the contrast is better and the brightness of the colors. This is important when (at home) movies, but ergonomic considering it is not recommended due to the reflections on the screen.

Font size

The greater the resolution of the screen is the more data can be displayed and the sharper the image. A high resolution is basically so favorable, because the image is sharper. Sometimes, however, opted for a relatively small screen (15 "or less) with high resolution at the same time, in those cases so the characters and icons are too small on the screen.
The good relationship between the character size and viewing distance is between 1:150 and 1:250 (of course depending on lighting conditions than the eyes and any eye diseases, etc.). When the characters on the screen 3.5 mm high is the optimal viewing distance 3.5 x 200 = 700 mm. so This is fine in the range of the ideal viewing distance: between lies between 60 and 80 cm.

In small characters, it is wise to display the characters larger, this can be done by three ways: on the screen.

1. By setting on page width (Page width).
2. By adjusting the zoom factor but a higher percentage.
3. By pressing Ctrl key and then to the scroll wheel to spin.

Dual or Multi-screen
More and more computer users are working with two or more concurrent applications, where information from one application must be compared with those in another, or must be copied from one to the other. In these cases it is pleasant, and it works much more efficiently, to both applications side by side, this can be done by using two monitors next to each other, or a widescreen flat screen that is split in two. Scientific research indicates that 33% less errors in specific tasks, and a minimum of 11% higher productivity (j. Colvin, 2004).
The choose a widescreen monitor that displayed dualscreen or two single screens next to each other depends on the type of task to be done. In principle can be displayed on two separate screens more than on a widescreen, below is a table that gives an indication how much information (number of characters) on a screen:

Twice a 17 "or 19" monitor can so clearly more information than on a 24 "widescreen.

Laptop or flat screen
Problems with too small characters and not adequately display information on the screen is especially a problem with laptops is smaller than 14 "or laptops of 15" with a very high resolution. In those cases, it is when working with the computer for long periods (more than 2 hours) wise to an external display. The display can be done via a docking station or directly to the laptop plugged in. Could possibly serve as a second screen laptop screen so dualscreen. See image on the right.
