Health effects

Reducing mental fatigue by alternation of tasks, not all effects on the performance of VDUs, but also clearly positive health effects. By adding variety to recover better from fatigue, and (if any) faster with complaints in hand, arm, neck and shoulder (RSI). In addition, the working comfort: employees experience less discomfort (De Vera Barredo et al., 2007).

Performance effects

During a work day takes the fatigue. For VDUs takes especially the mental (mental) fatigue during the day. Our speed of work takes thereby during the day and we're going to make more mistakes (Baker et al., 2005). These effects Act above all on in the afternoon (in the morning we are ' fresher '). Already after half an hour of concentrated work in the afternoon, for example, use our brains information, which can help to perform tasks faster, all no more (Lane et al., 2005). If the work rate is high, the number of errors already after half an hour, after an hour takes both the speed of work if the number of errors (Lane et al., 2000). By mental fatigue takes our sense of purpose: we are easier to distract and we are less flexible in solving problems as they present themselves. We try to muddle through on an inefficient way to finish the work. However, we do this unconsciously.

An effective remedy for mental fatigue is the work with other tasks. Those other tasks can rest, but also actively do something else leads to mental refreshment (for example, move or do something else what the personal interest). In this light, it is not surprising that with VDUs that up to 20% of their work time surfing the internet, average 12% more productive than their peers who don't (Coker, 2009).

With VDUs shows the working speed to rise by 11% and the number of errors with 3% to take off if, through interventions in their display, more variety in their work (Van den heuvel et al., 2002, Hedge & Evans, 2001).
